Toyota announced last Monday that it will be introducing a concept product which is a piece of wearable tech that could help the visually impaired and blind like no other product, or even a seeing eye dog ever have and maybe better than they ever could. This project is referred to as Project Blaid, which is a mobility device that would sit on the top of someones shoulders, and they use cameras as well as other signals. This allows them to layout the indoor space much better than out door spaces, however it is extremely effective in both settings. The information behind this data is very hard to understand.
The wearers of these products would be able to consult the device about the objects in the area of the room says Toyota. The wearable would guide the individual responses either via verbal commands or vibration that can be affected to a varying level of severity or proximity. In the future Toyota aims to upgrade Project Blaid with mapping and facial recognition technologies in the future. The Toyota corporation in addition on allowing the object the identification and has challenged its employees to submit videos and common landmarks in an order to help project Blaid and learn to identity unique structures and features as the regions dictate.
Toyota spokes man has said, “We started testing early versions of the device last year, including everything from the curves of its design to its functionality,” he told TechNewsWorld. “We’ve been encourage by the responses so far and look forward to continuing our collaboration so we can deliver a product that best serves the community’s needs.”
they go on to say,
“Our ultimate goal with this project is to develop a wearable device that helps people who are blind and visually impaired do more,” Moore said. “However, it’s an ongoing project that is still very much in development, so we are not releasing dates yet about the beta or market launch.”
“To that end, we work to contribute to society by developing partner robots that assist humans with everyday activities, improve their quality of life and extend personal mobility,” he said. “By sharing our technology and expertise this way, we hope to enrich the lives of people around the world.”
This is extremely admirable that Toyota is taking this leap forward and it is going to be interesting to see where this technology is going to be able to go. If we consider the leaps that are being made in regards to self driving cars, an industry that has immense money potential because it can affect every car owner and operator in the world. In regards of blindness its unfortunate that things don’t usually get innovated until there is a monetary benefit behind it. However, with the technologies that operate both systems so when the car tech improves, so to does the blind populous benefit. If these technologies are able to take off to the level that we hope then the severity and affect of blindness would be greatly down played in the future. Read More Project BLAID Offers Bright Future
